Paris With Kids

Ten family activities that actually work — including the ones children beg to go back to.

By Sophie Laurent, Paris Editor · Updated June 2025

Paris is more family-friendly than its reputation suggests. Children under 18 from the EU get free entry to national museums. The parks are vast and free. The RER gets you to Disneyland in 45 minutes. And the city has things children actually engage with — mummies, armour, model boats and gargoyles.

The main challenge is managing expectations around the major tourist sites. The Louvre is too big for young children unless you cherry-pick. The Eiffel Tower is wonderful if you actually go up. Below, every activity comes with the brutal truth about what age it actually works for.

1

Eiffel Tower

All ages €18–34 2–3 hrs

Lifts go all the way to the summit — no stairs required for younger children. The second floor is most manageable for families; the views are spectacular and the platform is wide enough that children don't feel exposed. Book the first entry slot of the day before crowds build.

Family tip

Buy tickets online 2–3 months ahead in summer. The 9am slot is significantly less crowded than anything after 11am.

2

The Louvre

8+ €17 (under 18 free) 2–3 hrs with kids

Don't try to do the whole Louvre with children — it's soul-destroying. Instead: Egyptian Antiquities (mummies are universally compelling), the Armour collection (real suits of armour and weapons), and the Mona Lisa (they'll want to see it even if the queue is frustrating). Under-18s from the EU are free.

Family tip

Download the kids' trail from the Louvre website before you go. Makes navigation much easier.

3

Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie

4+ €12–15 Half to full day

In La Villette, northeast Paris. The best children's science museum in France — interactive exhibits on space, maths, technology and the human body. The Géode IMAX cinema is next door (separate ticket). There's also an outdoor park with a real submarine and cycling paths.

Family tip

Take Metro line 7 to Porte de la Villette. Allow a full day — children won't want to leave.

4

Jardin d'Acclimatation

2–12 €5 entry + rides Half day

Amusement park and small zoo in the Bois de Boulogne, west Paris. Rides, a puppet theatre, pony rides, a water park, farm animals, and a children's art museum (Fondation Louis Vuitton is adjacent). The oldest children's theme park in France, open since 1860.

Family tip

Take Metro line 1 to Les Sablons. Buy a combined ticket for entry plus unlimited rides.

5

Aquarium de Paris — Cinéaqua

3+ €22 adults, €14 children 1.5–2 hrs

The Paris aquarium in the Trocadéro, steps from the Eiffel Tower. 500 species, shark tank, ray touchpool, cinema screens showing underwater films. Not the biggest aquarium in Europe but conveniently located and well done for a city aquarium.

Family tip

Combine with the Eiffel Tower on the same day — both are in Trocadéro. Book online to skip queues.

6

Notre-Dame Towers

8+ €5 (towers and treasury) 45 mins

Since the December 2024 reopening, climbing the Notre-Dame towers gives you a gargoyle's-eye view of Paris — literally face to face with the famous chimera demons. The view over the Île de la Cité and the Seine is spectacular. Steep spiral stairs; not suitable for very young children.

Family tip

Book tower tickets separately from the free cathedral entry. Slots sell out weeks ahead.

7

Seine River Cruise

All ages €15 adults, €8 children 1 hr

Children love being on the water, and a Seine cruise covers most of Paris's major monuments in an hour. Bateaux Parisiens has commentary in 15 languages on headphones. The boat goes past Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay — all from the river.

Family tip

Evening cruises after dark are magical for children — the Eiffel Tower sparkles on the hour.

8

Luxembourg Gardens Model Boats

2–10 €3.50 per boat 1–2 hrs

The octagonal pond in Luxembourg Gardens has model wooden sailboats you can rent for 30 minutes. Children use a long stick to push them across and retrieve them. It's been a Paris institution since 1870 and children love it completely regardless of screens and digital entertainment.

Family tip

Open daily from around 10am in good weather. Arrive early on weekends — queues form.

9

Disneyland Paris

3–12 especially €85–150 per person Full day

45 minutes from central Paris on RER A. Two parks: Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios. For families with young children, a full day here is mandatory. It's well-run, the rides are excellent, and it's significantly better than the California original in terms of theming. Book ahead; school holidays are very busy.

Family tip

Take RER A direct from Châtelet-Les Halles to Marne-la-Vallée/Chessy. Book a mid-week day for shorter queues. The Disney hotel is expensive but the convenience of being on site is real.

10

Musée en Herbe

4–12 €10 1.5 hrs

An art museum specifically designed for children, in the Marais. Interactive exhibitions introduce children to great artists and art movements through hands-on activities. Rotating exhibitions — check the programme. One of the best kept secrets for families in Paris.

Family tip

On Rue de l'Arbre Sec in the 1st arrondissement. Book in advance as capacity is limited.
